Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data (GID)

Australian Public Service agencies now have a single Framework for working with Indigenous data.

The Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data, places Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at its core. Recognizing that better outcomes are achieved when First Nations people have a genuine say in matters affecting them, including the use of data to inform policy-making in government.

The Framework aims to create greater awareness and support for Indigenous Data Sovereignty amongst APS agencies.

Co-designed with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners, the Framework supports increased agency of First Nations Australians in government-held Indigenous data across the data lifecycle.

APS Data Awards logoThe award-winning Framework was recognized at the 2024 APS Data Awards, for its effective co-design approach, promoting inclusiveness and increasing Indigenous representation in government data.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency will support Australian Public Service agencies to commence implementing the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data in January 2025.

Australian Government agencies are expected to develop a seven-year implementation plan, guided by four principles:

  1. Partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  2. Build data-related capabilities
  3. Provide knowledge of data assets
  4. Build an inclusive data system

The Framework supports the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, Priority Reform Three - Transforming Government Organisations and Priority Reform Four – Shared Access to Data at a Regional Level.
