Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Gooniyandi Rangers

Based near Fitzroy Crossing in the central Kimberley region, the Gooniyandi Rangers are working to realise the vision of their senior elders to look after country and culture. They have forged strong partnerships with the pastoral stations on their country, and are working to jointly manage areas of the Gooniyandi claim area.

The Gooniyandi Rangers undertake important environmental work, including fire management around communities and across pastoral stations, fauna research, biodiversity management and fee-for-service contracts to control the spread of noxious weeds.

The rangers also play a significant role in educating the next generation in how to look after country, using a combination of traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific methods.
