Babel Island IPA and Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers

Babel Island, to the east of Flinders Island, is Australia’s largest mutton bird rookery and an important cultural resource for Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

The 441 hectare island was dedicated as an Indigenous Protected Area in 2009.

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers manage the island - they continue to look after the mutton bird rookeries by removing boxthorn and planting tussocks to stop erosion and provide more suitable rookery areas.
