Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Badger Island IPA and Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers

To the west of Flinders Island, Badger Island and its surrounding resources previously supported a community of Tasmanian Aboriginal people. No longer inhabited, the 1,244 hectare island was dedicated as an Indigenous Protected Area in 2000.

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers manage the island and have successfully managed to control boxthorn.

To assist with research on the effects of grazing on the vegetation, four areas of the island have been fenced off to keep sheep out and trial different regeneration approaches.
