lungatalanana IPA and Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers

To the south of Cape Barren Island is lungatalanana (Clarke Island) - at 8,159 hectares it is the third largest of the Furneaux islands. The island has strong links to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and was dedicated as an Indigenous Protected Area in 2009.

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Rangers manage lungatalanana. In 2014 a large fire damaged the island, prompting the rangers to better understand fire and its relationship to Aboriginal land management.

The rangers are now working with the University of Tasmania, Macquarie University and the Australian National University to study the history of fire on the island, how it was used and its effects on the island.
