National Housing and Homelessness Agreement

While state and territory governments have primary responsibility for housing and homelessness, the Commonwealth provides funding to housing support and homelessness services. This includes Commonwealth Rent Assistance, to assist eligible Australians with meeting their rental costs, and the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement (NHHA), which commenced on 1 July 2018.

Under the NHHA, state and territory governments are responsible for determining priorities and the type and locations of services funded. State and territory governments also make decisions about social and community housing, including the building, allocation and refurbishment of dwellings.

Further information on the NHHA is available at the Council on Federal Financial Relations website.
