Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Boosting First Nations Employment (First Nations Unit)

Action description:

Establishment of a dedicated First Nations Unit within the Australian Public Service Commission to deliver and drive First Nations initiatives outlined in the Boosting First Nations New Policy Proposal (NPP) across the Australian Public Service (APS). The Unit will be a centralised, whole-of-government engine room for the APS to drive the change needed to meet the Government’s election commitment of 5% First Nations representation by 2030. The Unit will support agencies to strengthen cultural capability and will build partnership arrangements with First Nations organisations and expertise, consistent with Closing Gap Priority Reform One and the work of the Partnership Committee established through the APS Reform Plan.

The Unit will be responsible for centralised policy coordination including system-wide monitoring and reporting for this proposal. It will deliver additional whole of APS SES bulk round recruitment; system-wide tracking and building the data and evidence base across First Nations employee lifecycles to understand the drivers of success and the reasons individuals leave the APS and/or discontinue development opportunities.
