Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Digitisation of at-risk audio and video collections held by First Nations broadcasters and community organisations

Action description:

Community-led preservation and digitisation activities will be facilitated by AIATSIS and First Nations Media Australia (FNMA), the First Nations broadcasting and media sector peak body.
The AIATSIS Central Australia digitisation facility in Alice Springs opened in 2023 and will act as a hub for the project, with mobile digitisation kits and data storage enabling on country training, digitisation and storage of audio and visual materials. This will enable digitisation to happen on or as close to Country as possible.
Once digitised the material remains the property of the community-based organisation, however they will be encouraged to consider making the digitised content available for inclusion in the AIATSIS collection, and/or made publicly accessible through Trove or IndigiTube.
