Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Foundation Skills Programs

Action description:

In the 2023-24 Budget, the Government announced the redesigned Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program to ensure continued delivery of high quality language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) training while improving access for all Australians. The redesigned program will include First Nations-led support for First Nations people and workplace-based projects to improved foundation skills and job security for people in employment. The redesigned SEE program will commence on 1 July 2024.

The existing SEE program provides LLND assessment and training to eligible job seekers, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with the aim of improving their ability to secure employment either directly or through participation in further training. The existing SEE program is due to cease on 30 June 2024. The redesigned SEE program will begin from 1 July 2024.

The existing Foundation Skills for Your Future (FSFYF) program provides tailored LLND training for employed or recently unemployed people not registered with an employment services provider. It includes an option for employers to arrange tailored LLND support for their employees. The FSFYF Program will be replaced by the redesigned SEE program from 1 July 2024.

The existing FSFYF Remote Community Pilots (the Pilots) are testing ways to improve access to and development of LLND training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in remote community. The Pilots are located in the far west coast communities of Ceduna, Koonibba, Scotdesco, Yalata and Oak Valley in South Australia - Djarindjin/Ardyaloon/Lombadina and Beagle Bay in the Dampier Peninsula of Western Australia - Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory - Doomadgee in northern Queensland. The Pilots will be replaced by the redesigned SEE program from 1 July 2024 and grant funding will be made available to First Nations Community-Controlled organisations to partner with Registered Training Organisations or Adult Community Education providers to deliver tailored LLND training in community.
