Preventing harms for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from Alcohol and Other Substance Misuse

Action description: 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Treatment Services under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) currently supports  more than 85 AOD treatment activities including AOD prevention, early intervention, education, treatment, residential rehabilitation and aftercare services for First Nations people. Investment in Low Aromatic Fuel, capacity building and supply reduction activities to reduce volatile substance use including petrol sniffing in regional and remote communities.

Resourcing: 
$84.9 million: Funding of around $70 million per year is provided under the IAS for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander AOD treatment and support services. The Australian Government has committed $37.15 million through the IAS over three years to June 2025 for the supply of low aromatic fuel through BP Australia and Viva Energy Australia. The IAS also supports a range of other volatile substance use supply reduction and capacity building activities targeted at harmful volatile substance use ($2.5 million in 2023-24).
