Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Reduce rates of smoking and recreational vaping among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Action description:

Ongoing implementation of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program, which aims to improve life expectancy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by reducing tobacco use. The Budget 2023 package on vaping measures included an extension of the TIS program to 2026-27 and additional funding of $10m per annum (indexed) to scale up vaping prevention activities nationally. From 1 July 2025, the TIS program will be fully funded out of the Preventative Health and Chronic Disease outcome, which will free up Indigenous specific funding under the Indigenous Australians' Health Program funding for other First Nations Health priorities. National Tobacco Strategy (NTS) (under the National Preventative Health Strategy 2021-2030) sets a target to decrease prevalence of daily smoking among First Nations people aged 15 and older to 27% or less by 2030. Principles/actions outlined in this Strategy priority reform areas of CTG. Refer to NTS Actions for Priority Area 4 in (NTS).
