The Australian and Northern Territory Governments have committed $4 billion over ten years to improve housing in remote Northern Territory communities and homelands. 

This investment package will significantly reduce overcrowding in remote Northern Territory communities (by approximately half), and will deliver up to 2,700 houses over ten years. The package will also continue delivery repairs and maintenance to housing, and support the development and implementation of a cyclical repairs and maintenance program.

It will be delivered through a Federation Funding Agreement with the NT Government, which is being developed and negotiated to come into effect when current arrangements expire on 30 June 2024. 

The package includes $120 million to continue delivering upgrades and repairs to housing and essential infrastructure on NT homelands for the next three years. This funding will continue improvements made to housing on homelands, while further work is undertaken with partners to develop a joint, long term approach to housing on homelands.

The Australian Government will provide $1 million to Aboriginal Housing NT, to support the development of a Community Controlled Housing Model for the Northern Territory.

A Partnership Agreement between members of the Joint Steering Committee for Remote housing NT is also being developed, to guide the development and implementation of funding.
