The government is now operating in accordance with the Guidance on Caretaker Conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election.

Yugul Mangi Rangers work throughout the 670,000 hectares of land and sea country in the Roper-Gulf region. The rangers:  

  • conduct river, beach, and sea patrols  
  • undertake monitoring of sawfish and dugongs  
  • monitor water quality and seagrasses along the coastline. 

The Yugul Mangi Rangers are also busy on land conducting extensive dry season burning and controlling problem weeds such as mimosa, parkinsonia and rubber bush.  

The rangers have also worked with the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority to record and manage significant cultural sites.  

Other ranger activities include:  

  • invasive species control  
  • ghost net clearance  
  • cultural support  
  • environmental monitoring  
  • compliance.
