First Nations parents Rosemary and Daniel are building brighter futures for themselves and their families through the Parent Pathways program. With culturally responsive, flexible support tailored to their individual needs, both are making powerful strides in personal wellbeing, education, community participation and employment options.
Parent Pathways is designed to support parents and carers with their personal, study, or work goals. With the help of qualified mentors, participants receive flexible, person-centred support that reflects their unique circumstances and aspirations.
Rosemary, a First Nations mother, joined the program through training provider MRAEL to build her self-confidence and strengthen her role as a parent and community member. She has accessed culturally safe counselling and wellbeing support, helping her improve her mental health and self-esteem.
“I feel stronger every day. The support I’ve received has helped me believe in myself again—not just as a mum, but as someone who can make a difference in my community,” Rosemary said.
Daniel, a dedicated First Nations father, was one of the first participants with the Training Alliance Group (TAG) in the South West region of Western Australia when the service commenced. Daniel received financial assistance through Engagement Support vouchers and was also supported with education costs.
“They've helped me with the vouchers, paid my TAFE fees, and purchased me a laptop which will be very helpful. I can't thank Holly and her staff enough,” said Daniel
With guidance from his mentor, Daniel chose to study Land Management and Ecosystems at TAFE—an area that aligns with his interests and career goals.
Parent Pathways is part of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) Employment Services Programs. The initiative offers wrap around support to parents and carers. It empowers participants to pursue education, employment, or community leadership in their own time and way.
Both Rosemary and Daniel’s providers have played a vital role in their journeys. TAG’s team, including mentor Holly, supported Daniel with practical resources and encouragement. Rosemary’s provider offered culturally safe services that honoured her identity and experiences. These relationships have been central to their growth.
Rosemary is now experiencing improved wellbeing and confidence, while Daniel is actively pursuing education and building a stable future for his daughter.
“This program gave me the space to grow, and now I’m ready to give back,” said Rosemary
Their stories reflect the broader success of Parent Pathways in supporting First Nations parents to grow as individuals, caregivers, and leaders. For mentors involved in the program, it’s a rewarding process said Rosemary’s mentor Patrice.
“As a Parent Pathways mentor, I find true fulfillment in building authentic relationships, offering encouragement and helping others recognise their strengths.”
The Parent Pathways program contributes to Closing the Gap through Outcome 8 – Strong economic participation and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, Outcome 7 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth are engaged in employment or education and Outcome 4 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children thrive in their early years.
