The Australian Government has committed $23.2m to the Healing for Strong Families program. The program will support families impacted by family and domestic violence and at risk of engaging in the child protection system, through the delivery of place-based, trauma-aware and culturally responsive healing programs in response to the priorities and ideas expressed by local communities. The Healing for Strong Families program aims to strengthen families and support safety, identity and trauma recovery. The program contributes to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap Targets 12, 13 and 14.
The Healing for Strong Families program is part of the Dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan - 2023-2025 under the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–2032.
Place-based Healing Models, co-designed in each location, are focussed on community values and priorities. The program will operate in the following locations:
- Aurukun, QLD
- Coffs Harbour, NSW
- Port Augusta, SA
- Perth, WA
- Bidyadanga, WA
- Ngukurr, NT
- Numbulwar, NT.
From December 2025 to March 2026, providers will be able to apply for grants to deliver services in each location. Service delivery is expected to commence in all 7 communities from late 2026.
