Publication abstract:

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, in cooperation with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), funded an evaluation of the first 12 months of the co-design approach to the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in East Arnhem.

The evaluation identified and analysed the co‑design approaches to implementing the NDIS, including the activities and services delivered, the funding models supporting them, and how these contributed to an environment where local people have the opportunity to establish businesses and gain employment.

The evidence-based report provides nine recommendations and highlights a number of positive elements and learnings on the place based delivery approach to delivering the NDIS to Indigenous communities.

The Department shared the key findings and recommendations with the NDIA, which has implemented some of the East Arnhem initiatives in other Indigenous communities.
